This is the main canal of Venice, flowing through the city and dividing it in two. It is around 4 kilometres long, with a depth of 5 metres, beginning at the Piazzale Roma and flowing into the Basin of Saint Mark.
As we pass down the canal we get a fine view of the elegant and prestigious palazzi which in the time of the Republic served as the homes and warehouses of the wealthy and noble merchants of Venice.
